Hugh Scott has been practicing law in Boston for more than 40 years.  


After graduating from Williams College in 1968, he served sea duty as a US Navy officer in USS Charles H. Roan (DD 853), graduated from Columbia Law School in 1974, and then clerked for US District Judge Frank J. Murray in federal court in Boston.  From 1978 to 1983, he served as an Assistant US Attorney in the Special Investigations Unit of the US Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts, where he investigated and prosecuted public corruption and white collar crime cases.


Mr. Scott spent 37 years in private practice at a major Boston law firm, where he handled a wide variety of litigation.  He served as head of the firm's litigation department for eight years.


The many cases handled by Mr. Scott in courts around the country include:


          -  conviction of the Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee of the Massachusetts Senate for accepting bribes


          -  conviction of members of the Fall River Housing Authority for accepting bribes


          -  conviction of the head of the Real Estate Department of the City of Boston for income tax evasion arising from bribes


          -  defense of a major New England bank indicted for alleged currency reporting violations, resulting in acquittal on fraud charges


          -  representation of a major national company in settlement of charges of criminal environmental pollution


          -  obtaining the largest individual income tax refund (almost $50 million) from the state of Massachusetts after trial before the Appellate Tax Board


          -  defense of first degree murder cases


          -  defense of an alleged Iranian arms merchant for trafficking in missile parts


          -  defense of a major national commodities broker against civil RICO charges


          -  obtaining a directed judgment in favor of a major national insurance company in a trial seeking insurance coverage for industrial environmental pollution


          -  defense of a major national insurer in litigation seeking insurance coverage for billions of dollars worth of asbestos claims


          -  service as a mediator, successfully resolving civil cases


          -  representation of an Adventist Church seeking to preserve their church from commercial development


          -  representation of a federal prisoner seeking commutation of a life sentence imposed for a minor role in a drug conspiracy


Mr. Scott has been listed in "Best Lawyers in America" in five categories:  Bet-The-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, White Collar Criminal Defense, Insurance Law, and Appellate Practice.  He has been listed as a "Massachusetts Super Lawyer."  He has received an AV rating (the highest level) in the "Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory."  He has been elected a Fellow of the American College Of Coverage Counsel.  He has been listed in Who'sWho In America. 


Mr. Scott is the author of the single-volume treatise "Computer and Intellectual Property Crime:  Federal and State Law"  (BNA 2001).  He has over the years authored numerous articles and spoken at a variety of continuing legal programs.


Mr. Scott is admitted to practice before the US Supreme Court; the US Courts of Appeal for the First, Ninth, and Federal Circuits; the US District Court for Massachusetts; and the US Court of Federal Claims.  He is also a member of the Boston Bar Association.


Mr. Scott's current practice focuses on pro bono representation of indigent clients in need of legal assistance and other matters.  He is also available to handle or consult on suitable litigation matters, and to serve as an arbitrator or mediator.


In his spare time, Mr. Scott can be found rowing his single scull on the Charles River, riding his bike in the Pan Mass Challenge, sailing his sloop in Cape Cod waters, or walking his beloved dog Maggie through the woods somewhere.
